Preventative Maintenance Services

Preventative Vehicle Maintenance Phoenix Arizona | Preventative Car Maintenance Tempe AZ

We are Tri-City Auto Repair and we’ve been in Tempe since 1972. We provide complete auto repair and maintenance in the East Valley.

We have found a lot of miss information surrounding transmission service and what’s required. Information comes from auto manufacturers, automotive manufacturing dealers, general auto repair shops, lube shops, oil companies, car washes, back yard mechanics and transmission shops. When you ask all of these, rarely will you get the same answer when it comes to how you should take care of your transmission. You have to realize that each of our trusted sources comes from some completely different perspectives, backgrounds and knowledge bases, and most of these have been subject to inaccurate information themselves. Most of these sources would gladly tell you they don’t really understand the inside of a transmission, maybe just a conceptual understanding.

Tri-City Auto Repair's perspective & recommendation comes from this; performing thousands of transmission overhauls & hundreds of thousands of transmission services over the last 45 years. We live, eat and breathe transmissions. It’s our passion! We perform costly repairs on transmission that could have been avoided had the transmissions been properly serviced & maintained regularly. The transmission is the second most expensive component in your vehicle, who do you want to entrust your transmission to.

All Our Preventative Maintenance Services Include "Factory Fill" assuring the service meets the requirements of upholding the factory warranty. This has been widely overlooked in the industry, However, there are specific transmission fluids your car requires and based on experience, Tri-City Auto Repair Service is adamant about "Factory Fill".

Here are our rule of thumb service intervals:

  • Automatic Transmissions, Annually or Every 24,000 miles
  • Standard Transmissions, Bi-Annual or Every 30,000 miles
  • Transfer Cases, aka 4WD or AWD, Every 3 Years or 45,000 miles
  • Differentials, Bi-Annual or Every 30,000 miles

In most cases our rule of thumb recommendations meet or exceed factory recommendations. Often times we find factory recommendations to be light or non-existent. Some manufacturers say no service at all even when their technology in the transmission is no different than that of the next manufacturer who recommends frequent service. Also, one of the myths we often have to dispel is that your transmission is a sealed unit and service is not needed. We have yet to run into a sealed transmission – Try to remember maintenance free batteries in Arizona and how long they lasted. Automobile manufacturers are not only in the business of selling cars, but also transmission parts.

Our recommendations & factory recommendations do vary depending on vehicle make, model and fluid type. Intervals provided above are the most common. Consult your factory manual provided with your vehicle or don’t hesitate to call us for more details.

“Tow Vehicles” – Towing creates a tremendous amount of heat in your transmission quickly oxidizing the fluid. Our recommendations should be cut by half for tow vehicles.

Here are our three levels of our “Automatic Transmission Service”

1. “Transmission Wellness Check”
Not sure if you need transmission service or not, everything seems to work well and you want some extra piece of mind – This service is just as it sounds and includes our transmission protectant supplement.

2. Traditional Transmission Service – Includes:
Initial road test, transmission scan where required, transmission filter and pan gasket replacement when applicable, replenish fluid, add transmission protectant supplement, complete drive train inspection of all drive train fluids, universal joints and mounts, final test drive and an overall indication to the customer of the overall health of the transmission and drive train (most common)

3. Complete Transmission Fluid Exchange (where required) – Includes:
Initial road test, transmission scan where required, transmission filter and pan gasket replacement when applicable, a complete exchange of all transmission fluid, complete drive train inspection of all drive train fluids, universal joints and mounts, final test drive and an overall indication to the customer of the overall health of the transmission and drive train (where required)

All of our automatic transmission services come with our “Service-Guard” Warranty which has coverage for your transmission should any subsequent repairs to the transmission be required before you next scheduled transmission service.
