What Does Your Car’s Catalytic Converter Do?

A catalytic converter is a large metal box with two pipes coming out of it, bolted to the underside of your car. One pipe in and one pipe out.

The input pipe is connected to the engine and brings in the hot, polluted fumes from your engine's combustion chamber.

The output pipe is connected to muffler and then to the tailpipe (or exhaust). As the exhaust gases from the engine fumes blow over the catalyst, chemical reactions take place on its surface that break apart the pollutant gases and convert them into other gases that are safe enough to be released out into the air.

Emissions regulations vary considerably from state to state and most automobile spark-ignition engines in North America have been fitted with catalytic converters since 1975.

Signs That You Need a Catalytic Converter Replacement

  • Reduced engine performance
  • Drop in fuel efficiency
  • Difficulty starting your vehicle
  • Rattling sounds coming from your hood
  • Check-Engine light is on
  • Failed emissions test

When Should Your Catalytic Converter Be Replaced

The good news is that catalytic converters do not have any moving parts, so they are practically maintenance free. Unlike tires, brakes and other parts, the catalytic converter on a modern vehicle should not require frequent replacement.

However, it is still common that your catalytic converter may need to be replaced during the lifetime of your vehicle. Drivers have bottomed-out their vehicles which can cause severe damage to the part. This can lead to a blockage of the flow of exhaust - which in turn will decrease your engine performance drastically.

If your vehicle is burning oil excessively, this can also lead to a decrease in the lifetime of your catalytic converter.

You should always be cautious of any fuel additives that may counteract the job or damage your catalytic converter.
